Optimise Your Lifestyle & Boost Your Business

Optimise Your Lifestyle & Boost Your Business

Want to grow your Shopify business and take it to the next level? Duh, of course you do! Very few people are content with the status quo, even during these turbulent times of uncertainty, economic instability, and political turmoil.

As a Shopify Plus agency, we can help. But before we get on a free strategy call, let’s take 8 minutes to look at what lifestyle has to do with running a business.

Even though we’ve been invited to stay where we are like never before, amid discomfort, many of us are striving to improve, transform, and thrive our way through this tricky time. While many people are finding all sorts of ways to blame the current situation for their inherent aversion to hard work, there are as many of us looking for that shiny diamond amid the rubble. Kudos to you. Kudos to all of us, actually, for following our own lead and staying as present and productive as possible.

For those of you who are fighting like mad to keep yourself lifted and striving for progress, this article is a critical read for you. For the risk and hard-work averse, stay with us. “Optimising” and “boosting” are interchangeable terms that denote a certain amount of effort and fumbling in the dark for the light switch (you can, and you should). There may never be a better time in your life than 2021 to finally take those steps toward real, fundamental, transformative change in both your life and your business. And while that sounds like BIG work, it doesn’t have to be. As author James Clear reminds us, sometimes it’s those small changes and “atomic habits” that make all the difference.

So, let’s take a look first at why your business is so dependent on your state of health. By health, we mean your overall wellness: your mind, your physical body, and your emotional store bank (you’ll notice we intentionally avoided using mind-body-soul so as to keep our audience wide, but it’s essentially the same thing).

We want to focus on what we’re doing to care for ourselves first and foremost. Only then can we foster good relationships with others and tackle the stuff our business requires of us. If you’re not sleeping well, eating an effective diet, getting enough exercise, or regularly clearing the day’s mental garbage, then your business is suffering. This is especially true for the business owner that wears all the hats. If it’s all riding on you, you have to be in pretty strong form. If most of it is reliant on other people, the decision making is still in your court and you’re still leading the pack, so you’ve got to ensure you’re modeling for the team the kinds of habits and behaviours you want representing and running your business.

Occasionally you see those entrepreneurs that somehow manage to run a successful business while leading a messy lifestyle, especially in the international digital nomad community. There’s a lot of partying, late nights, random engagements that eat into the work day, and other shenanigans that interrupt an otherwise productive enterprise. Such arrangements don’t last very long, and it’s usually the business that suffers first.

A word of advice for the starting entrepreneur: don’t make that error. Schedule your personal life around your business if you want to succeed.

So what are some small-but-surefire ways you can optimise your lifestyle to better support your business?

No Interruptions Please

For starters, stop interrupting yourself. Sounds strange, right? But you likely know exactly what we’re talking about. How close is your mobile phone to you right now? Whilst you probably need it for business, it’s likely that a good deal of the activity you engage in on it isn’t work related. Don’t beat yourself up for it. Just notice it and take action to improve it.

There are other ways you may be interrupting yourself besides the use of your mobile. In his book The War of Art, Steven Pressfield describes resistance as anything that prevents you from achieving your goal. Each unnecessary break you take during your scheduled work session is a form of resistance. Making excuses is a form of resistance. The list goes on.

One of the key ways to recognise your own resistance is through mindfulness. As you go through your day, acknowledge those times in which you interrupt your work flow to attend to some “urgent” unrelated task. Make a note of it. Notice how it interferes with your ability to get back in that flow place where you produce high-quality work. Then make amends to improve this. The more often you engage in mindful working, the clearer your own habits become and the better able you are to recognise which ones are ineffective and outright harmful for your business growth.

Nothing Wrong With Nootropics

The best nootropics for entrepreneurs are natural ones, let’s make that clear. If you’re not familiar with nootropics, they are substances that can boost brain function. If you’ve ever seen the film Limitless, that’s a Hollywood-induced exaggerated version of how a nootropic can help your brain (but that film’s moral lesson is why we stress natural ones!). Natural nootropics can increase blood, nutrients, and oxygen to the brain, protect the brain from free radicals, boost neurotransmitters that promote cognitive skills, and block chemicals that affect concentration and produce brain fog.

Some examples of nootropics are:

  • Bulletproof coffee made with pure MCT oil for focus
  • Ginkgo biloba for creativity
  • Maca and varieties of bacopa for assimilating new information
  • Ashwagandha for mental concentration and stress relief

Omega 3 fatty acids from marine sources are also excellent brain food and only just require you to go out for (or order in) high-quality sushi!

Take A Hike

Literally. If you’re just not getting into the flow, one of the worst things you can do is push yourself and waste your time. It usually results in frustration, fatigue, and ultimately lost productivity. Oftentimes the reason we simply can’t concentrate is because we have stuck energy in our bodies that needs release.

One way to manage this is to start your day with exercise––any type of exercise. Obviously, exercise for better health and productivity isn’t a new idea, but it’s one worth repeating because we tend to “forget.” Choose your flavour, whether that’s a brisk walk, a run, hitting the gym for weight training, camping out on your yoga mat for an hour, or even sex. Morning exercise wakes the body up, increases circulation, and produces feel-good neurotransmitters like serotonin that elevate the mood and relax the nervous system.

Exercise has major brain benefits too that can influence productivity. According to a Harvard study, exercise influences brain power in the following ways:

  • Better concentration
  • Sharper memory
  • Quicker learning
  • Extended mental stamina
  • Enhanced creativity
  • Reduced stress

Integrating exercise into a daily routine supports your brain’s ability to understand that “this is the new normal” and get your body on board.

The New Normal Indeed!

Any new implementations to lifestyle routine will start out feeling uncomfortable because they’re unfamiliar. If they don’t feel uncomfortable right away, you will likely enter a phase in which they do for a short while as your body adapts to your new way routine. Give it time. If you decide to take nootropics for concentration, we recommend consulting a health professional to determine the right type and dose and to ensure there are no interactions with other medications or supplements you may be taking.

As Shopify ecommerce website specialists, we’ve learned a lot about productivity and business optimisation. Through our own growth and the many business owners we’ve helped get their shops up and running, a healthy lifestyle is one of the most common factors that influence a successful business.

If you want to know more about how we can help you with your Shopify store and overall business productivity, give us a call. We’d love to hear from you.
